Resident bacteria exist in the female reproductive tract (FRT), among which the endometrial microbial species is lower than that of vagina, and normal microbiome plays a role in maintaining the normal physiological functions of reproductive tract. Assisted reproductive technology (ART) is functioned as the main treatment for female infertility, the overall clinical pregnancy rate of which is still low. The specific mechanism by which dysbiosis of the FRT affects ART embryo implantation is still not completely understood yet. Recent studies have found that microbial dysbioses such as decrease in abundance of Lactobacillus and increase in number of other pathogenic bacteria can lead to an abnormal endometrial microenvironment. The imbalance of ART microbiome would affect the endometrial receptivity and hinder the embryo implantation process, ultimately leading to the failure of embryo implantation and other adverse pregnancy outcomes. The author intends to review the latest progress of current research related to FRT microbiome and ART, to improve ART success rate of infertility.
