Study on Screening and Diagnosis of Down's Syndrome Carried out by Department of Health and Department of Family Planning Department

Objective

To explore the new way of screening and diagnosis of Down's syndrome(DS).

Methods

From January to December 2009, a total of 18 842 pregnant woman underwent prenatal screening and diagnosis of Down's syndrome by serological examination, abdominal ultrasound, and fetal amniocentesis which carried out by Weifang city combined with Department of Health, Maternal and Child Health Hospital, and Department of Population and Family Planning.

Results

The screening rate is 25.34% (18 842/74 356) in 2009 which is more than 20 percentage in 2008. The risk of Down's syndrome prenatal screening found 663 cases of pregnant women (0.16‰, 3/18 842). Among them, 653 cases received fetal amniocentesis, and only 3 cases were diagnosed as Down's syndrome. Including one was 18-trisomy (0.05‰, 1/18 842), two were hermaphroditism (0.11‰, 2/18 842), one was cat called syndrome (0.05‰, 1/18 842), and 12 were chromosome abnormalities (0.37‰, 12/18 842), a total of 19 cases (1.01‰, 19/18 842) for adverse pregnancy.

Conclusion

Family planning departments rely on preferential policies, advantages of family planning network to build the capacity of health could guarantee prevention of Down syndrome babies.
