Analysis of Mycoplasma pneumoniae and Legionella pneumophila IgM antibody testing results in children with acute respiratory tract infection

Objective

To investigate Mycoplasma pneumoniae(MP) and Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1(LP1) infection and epidemiologic characteristics in children with acute respiratory tract infection(ARI).

Methods

A total of 1 167 children who were diagnosed as ARI in Sichuan Provincial Hospital of Women and Children from January to December in 2013 were chosen as study subjects.Indirect immunofluorescence assay was used to detect serum IgM antibody of MP and LP1.The positive detection rates were compared statistically amomg different quarters of 2013, age and gender.

Results

①The positive detection rates of MP, LP1 and MP+ LP1 were 25.0%, 7.4% and 4.3% respectively in 1 167 ARI patients.②The positive detection rate of MP in the second quarter of 2013(36.5%) was higher than that in the first, the third and the fourth quarter of 2013(21.2%, 23.1%, 22.6%), and the differences were statistically significant(χ2=7.57, 12.07, 13.55; P<0.01). There were no significant differences among LP1 and MP+ LP1 positive detection rates in different quarters of 2013(χ2=6.57, 5.88; P>0.05). ③There were no significant differences among the positive detection rates of MP, LP1 and MP+ LP1 in different age of children with ARI (χ2=199.01, 35.18, 19.89; P<0.01), and the positive detection rates of MP, LP1 and MP+ LP1 increased with increasing age of children with ARI.④The positive detection rate of MP in female children with ARI was higher than that in male, and the difference was statistically significant(29.0% vs 22.6%, χ2=5.88, P<0.05); but there were no significant differences of LP1 and MP+ LP1 positive detection rates in different gender(P>0.05).

Conclusion

The children with ARI had high positive detection rates of MP and LP1, and should be paid enough attention by paediatricians.
