Objective

To study the electroencephalogram (EEG) of children affected by both benign childhood epilepsy with centro-temporal spikes(BECT) and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder(ADHD).

Methods

From January 2006 to December 2011,a total of 48 cases of children affected by both BECT and ADHD were retrospectively analyzed. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Board of Investigation in Human Beings of Cangzhou People's Hospital, Informed consent was obtained from the parents of each participating child.

Results

The average onset age of seizure in children with ADHD and BECT was(4. 52 ± 1. 96)years. The clinical presentations of the typical BECT was 15 cases(31. 3%),and the atypical BECT was 33 cases (68. 7%),of which included 20 cases (60. 6%) negative myoclonus,8 cases (24. 2%) atypical absence seizure,5 cases (15.2%) speech disorder and aphasia, 10 cases (30.3%) cognitive function decline. The spike and waves (SW) index during slow sleep in EEG were 5 cases (10. 4%) under 20%,14 cases (29. 2%) between 20% to 50% and 29 cases (60. 4%) above 50%. In all the children with ADHD and BECT, the average onset age of ADHD was (5. 52 ± 3. 13) years, and the clinical presentations of the ADHD prior to BECT were 15 cases (31. 3%). The ADHD clinical subtypes, including predominantly inattention (I), predominantly hyperactive-impulsive (HI) and combined type (C) were classified. 23 cases (47. 9%) were ADHD-I,12 cases (25. 0%) and 13 cases (27. 1%) were ADHD-HI and ADHD-C,respectively.

Conclusions

The average onset age of BECT with ADHD was earlier than that of normal. In the cases, the clinical presentations were always atypical BECT and ESES (electrical status epilepticus during sleep) in EEG. The ADHD clinical subtype was mostly ADHD-I.
