Objective

To explore the change of platelet (PLT) parameters and its clinical significance in neonates with congenital syphilis (CS).

Methods

From February 2005 to 2013, a totle of 78 neonates with CS were included in the study, and divided into symptom group(n=38) and non-symptom group(n=40) according to their clinical symptoms. They were divided into mother treated group(n=54) and mother non-treated group (n=24) as well according to their mothers' treatment during pregnancy.Meanwhile 39 normal neonates were chosen as control group(n=29). PLT count, mean platelet volume(MPV) and platelet distribution width ( PDW) were detected in the first day and the 13th day after being treated. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Board of Investigation in Human Being of Clinic Medical College of Yangzhou University.Informed consent was obtained from each parents. There were no significant differenc in general clinical data among these groups(P>0.05).

Results

PLT count in symptom group during the early stage were obviously lower than those of non-symptom group and control group( P<0.05), meanwhile MPV and PDW were obviously higher than those of other two groups(P<0.05). There had significant differences in PLT count, MPV and PDW at the first day and the 13th day after being treated between symptom group and non-symptom group(P<0.05). There was no significantly difference of PLT wount, MPV and PDW at the 13th day after being treated among symptom group, non-symptom group and control group(P>0.05). PLT count in mother non-treated group was lower than that of mother treated group and control group (P<0.05), and MPV and PDW were obviously higher than those of other two groups(P<0.05).

Conclusions

Changes of PLT parameters can be of reference value for determining the severity of damage and the curative effects of neonates with CS.
