The expression and significance of hypoxia inducible factor 1α following exposure to hypoxia and/orischemia in newborn rats

Objective

To investigate the expression, distribution and significance of hypoxia inducible factor la (HIF-1α) following exposure to hypoxia and (or) ischemia in newborn rats.

Methods

Postnatal 10 days SD rats underwent hypoxia, ischemia, hypoxia-ischemia, or sham surgery. HIF-1α expression and distribution were detected with immunohistochemistry.

Results

HIF-1α expression significantly increased at 4 h following hypoxia, ischemia, or hypoxia-ischemia compared to sham controls. Furthermore, HIF-1α expression peaked at 8 h following hypoxia and hypoxia-ischemia, but at 24 h following ischemia alone. HIF-1α was distributed in important functional areas of the brains, such as the cortex and hippocampus.

Conclusion

Timing and pattern of HIF-1α up regulation varied by type of brain injury. The expression and distribution of HIF-1α following brain injury suggests that HIF-1α may be related to cellular repair.
