Objective

To explore the effects of partially whey protein hydrolyzed formula on prevention of eczema and physical growth in high risk infants.

Methods

From October 2012 to 2013, a total of 184 high risk infants were included in the study. They were randomly divided into intervention group(n=91) and non-intervention group(n=93). Breast feeding+ partially whey protein hydrolyzed formula were taken in intervention group.Regular formula was taken in non-intervention group. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Board of Investigation in Human Being of People's Hospital of Deyang City.Informed consent was obtained from each participants's parents. The incidence rate of eczema were observed in both groups, and the physical growth, including the weight, height and body mass index(BMI), were evaluated between two groups.

Results

At 6 months and 12 months follow-up, the incidence rate and the severity of eczema in the intervention group were significantly lower than those of non-intervention group(P<0.05). There were no significant differences on the physical growth between two groups(P>0.05).

Conclusions

Partially hydrolyzed whey formula can reduces the incidence rate and severity of eczema in high risk infants.Meanwhile it also can maintain the normal growth of high risk infants.
