Objective

To investigate curative effect of nipples preserving modified radical mastectomy treatment for Ⅰ, Ⅱ stage breast cancer.

Methods

40 breast cancer patients with nipples preserving modified radical mastectomy treatment from March 2006 to June 2012 in our hospital were collected.Stage Ⅰ has 24 cases, stage Ⅱ has 16 cases. All the patients were conform to operation indication. The study protocol was approved by the Ethical Review Board of Investigation in Human Beings of Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Jiangxi Province.Informed consent was obtained from each participating patient.

Results

In 40 patients, 4 cases with papillary epidermis partial necrosis (2 cases with papillary skin wound healing, 2 cases with papillary necrosis), 2 cases with subcutaneous effusion( cured by pumping liquid out), 34 cases with incision primary healing. In all cases , the nipple tangent pathological examination showed no cancer cell infiltration. All the 40 cases were followed up, the longest one was 70 months, the average were 48 months; 38 patients had no local recurrence and distant metastasis, 2 cases with tumors located in the papillary 3 cm had recurrence 24 months later and had nipple-areola complex excision, followed up for 22 months without recurrence.

Conclusions

Nipples preserving modified radical mastectomy as a breast cancer operation treatment for Ⅰ and Ⅱ stage is feasible.
